Lavender Fields
Lavender Fields is Lucien Aubry at his most fragrant and serene. Rows of purple lavender sweep in bold geometric stripes toward a simple stone farmhouse and a line of blue hills, a single rounded tree standing sentinel, all beneath an enormous golden sun in a warm flat sky. Aubry builds the scene from clean planes of violet, ochre and teal with no outlines, then lays a soft paper grain over all for the warmth of a mid-century travel poster. The contrast of cool lavender and warm sky is deeply restful. Tranquil, sun-soaked and beautifully simple, it captures the drowsy heat of a Provençal afternoon in pure Voyage Modernism.
