The Great Bridge
The Great Bridge is Lucien Aubry's hymn to the modern harbour city. A sweeping steel arch bridge spans a wide blue bay, and behind it a skyline of flat-vector towers stacks up in terracotta, cream and slate, while ferries and yachts cross the water below. A vast pale-yellow sun fills the sky, lending the whole scene the calm grandeur of a vintage travel advertisement. True to his Voyage Modernism, Aubry uses no outlines — only crisp interlocking planes of colour and a fine paper grain that softens the image like an old lithograph. Confident, spacious and quietly heroic, it turns the engineering of a great bay city into a serene piece of poster art.
