Wildflowers in a Jug
Wildflowers in a Jug is Cornelis Maes at his most naturalistic. Poppies, cornflowers, daisies, wheat and meadow grasses spill loosely from a rustic stoneware jug, a bee in flight and fallen blooms on the ledge below, the whole lit by a soft dramatic light against deep shadow. Maes turns from courtly opulence to the quiet beauty of the field, yet renders it with the same masterly precision — the crumple of a poppy petal, the haze on a cornflower, the gloss of the glazed jug. The looser, wilder arrangement gives the piece a fresh, breathing life. Humble, luminous and beautifully observed, it brings the meadow indoors in the grand old-master manner.
An original oil painting on canvas by Cornelis Maes, painted to order — never a reproduction. Sumptuous old-master still lifes — lavish flowers, fruit and banquet pieces in dramatic chiaroscuro, hyper-detailed and richly glazed in the manner of the Dutch masters.
