Tulip Bouquet
Tulip Bouquet opens Cornelis Maes's Dutch Golden Age Still Life. A lavish arrangement of flamed tulips, blush roses and heavy-headed peonies spills from a glass vase on a stone ledge, a snail creeping at its foot and a butterfly poised above, every petal jewelled with dewdrops. Maes works in the great tradition of Bosschaert and van Huysum, setting the blooms against a deep, near-black ground so the colours glow as if lit by a single shaft of light. Fallen petals and a leaning tulip lend the studied asymmetry the old masters loved. The translucent glazing and crisp impasto highlights give the flowers a breathing realism. Opulent, luminous and exquisitely composed, it is a sumptuous overture to the collection.
An original oil painting on canvas by Cornelis Maes, painted to order — never a reproduction. Sumptuous old-master still lifes — lavish flowers, fruit and banquet pieces in dramatic chiaroscuro, hyper-detailed and richly glazed in the manner of the Dutch masters.
