Fruit Banquet

Fruit Banquet is Cornelis Maes at his most abundant. Grapes cascade beside a split pomegranate, peaches, figs and a swollen pumpkin heaped around a silver tazza, a tall wine glass catching the light at the edge of a dark ground. Maes paints in the manner of the Dutch banquet masters, every surface — the bloom on the grapes, the seeds of the pomegranate, the velvet skin of the peach — rendered with loving, tactile precision. A single raking light pulls the fruit from deep shadow into glowing relief. Insects and a half-cut lemon add the old-master notes of transience. Rich, sensuous and masterfully glazed, it is a feast of colour and texture in the grand still-life tradition.
