Vanitas

Vanitas is among the most powerful works in Cornelis Maes's Dutch Golden Age Still Life. A pale skull rests among roses on a draped table beside a guttering candle, an hourglass and worn leather books — the classic emblems of mortality and the passing of time. Maes stages the scene in deep chiaroscuro, the warm candlelight glinting on bone and brass while the corners dissolve into darkness. The wilting blooms and spent flame whisper the old message: all is fleeting. Yet the painting is sumptuous as well as solemn, the textures of skull, petal and parchment rendered with exquisite care. Sombre, beautiful and richly symbolic, it is the moral heart of the collection.

An original oil painting on canvas by Cornelis Maes, painted to order — never a reproduction. Sumptuous old-master still lifes — lavish flowers, fruit and banquet pieces in dramatic chiaroscuro, hyper-detailed and richly glazed in the manner of the Dutch masters.
