Citrus & Silver is Cornelis Maes at his most refined. A half-peeled lemon spirals its bright rind over the edge of a silver platter, oranges and a roemer of pale wine beside an ornate gilt cup, all caught in a single raking light against a dark ground. Maes works in the manner of Willem Kalf's pronkstilleven — the 'ostentatious' still life — relishing the play of light on metal, glass and citrus peel. The cool gleam of silver against the warm fruit is masterfully observed, the glazing deep and luminous. Restrained yet sumptuous, every reflection precisely judged, it is a study in luxury and light in the finest Dutch tradition.
