Mosaic Sunflowers

Mosaic Sunflowers is Marisol Vey's loving answer to the great floral still lifes of the past, rebuilt tile by tile. A generous bouquet crowds a simple ceramic vase, and Vey renders every petal and dark seed-head as a glowing tessera of gold, amber, ochre and brown, set into the leaded lines that give each bloom its stained-glass crispness. The warm flowers blaze against a cool tessellated ground of teal and cream, the contrast making them almost vibrate. The impasto is thick and buttery, the heads standing in real relief. Joyful, abundant and radiant with inner light, it is a celebration of high summer caught in jewelled glass.
