Celestial Inquiry

In the cubist work 'Celestial Inquiry', the Renaissance astronomer is deconstructed into a series of intersecting planes of candle‑lit amber, deep indigo and parchment‑white, each facet revealing a different aspect of his scholarly pursuit. The astrolabe is rendered as a lattice of concentric circles and angular spokes, its intricate markings displayed from several angles at once, while the astronomer’s hand is depicted in overlapping rectangles that capture both the delicate grip and the intellectual tension of observation. The candle flame flickers as fragmented orange triangles, casting abstracted shadows across the scholar’s study, where books and parchments become stylised rectangles stacked in a rhythmic cascade. The background suggests a vaulted ceiling, reduced to a series of overlapping arches in muted greys, their depth implied through juxtaposition rather than linear perspective. Subtle hints of a celestial map appear as fragmented constellations of tiny star‑shaped polygons scattered across the upper plane, echoing the astronomer’s quest for knowledge. By presenting multiple viewpoints within a single flattened space, the piece conveys both the meticulous concentration of the scholar and the expansive wonder of the heavens, translating the quiet illumination of candlelight into a dynamic interplay of colour and form.

An original oil painting on canvas by Eira Voss, painted to order — never a reproduction. Eira Voss reimagines Cubism with a luminous metallic palette and tactile surface, creating a fresh sub‑theme that blends reflective planes with translucent layers.
