Poppy Mosaic

Poppy Mosaic closes Marisol Vey's series on a note of pure exuberance. A rolling field of scarlet poppies tumbles across the lower canvas beneath a swirling sky, and every flower, stem and cloud is a glowing tessera — crimson, emerald, gold and cerulean tiles fitted into dark leaded lines until the whole surface vibrates. Vey's impasto is at its thickest here, the petals standing in real relief so the field flickers as the light moves. There is an echo of the great post-impressionist wheat fields in the swirling energy, but the idiom is entirely Vey's own: a stained-glass meadow, jubilant and alive, that turns a humble flower into a celebration of colour and light.
