Arctic Lament
The cubist composition 'Arctic Lament' disassembles the solitary polar bear into a series of angular planes in stark whites, muted blues and glacial greys, each facet suggesting a different angle of the animal’s massive form against the icy horizon. The bear’s fur is rendered as overlapping shards of textured white, while its powerful limbs are depicted as intersecting rectangles that convey both weight and delicate balance on the thin ice floe. The aurora borealis overhead is visualised as sweeping ribbons of luminous turquoise, violet and soft pink, broken into fragmented bands that ripple across the sky like musical staff lines. The surrounding nightscape is abstracted into a lattice of deep indigo triangles and geometric silhouettes of distant icebergs, their forms hinted at through subtle gradients of cold light. The composition’s rhythm mirrors the gentle undulation of the aurora, with repeated geometric motifs that pulse in synchrony with the bear’s breathing. By flattening depth and presenting multiple perspectives, the work captures the haunting solitude of the Arctic environment while evoking the ethereal beauty of the natural light display, translating the scene’s quiet melancholy into a visual language of colour and structure.
