Oysters
Oysters is Cornelis Maes at his most sensuous. Opened oysters glisten on pewter beside a cut lemon, a fluted wine glass, a cluster of grapes and a silver knife laid on a crumpled white cloth, the scene pulled from darkness by a single dramatic light. Maes paints in the tradition of the Dutch breakfast and banquet pieces, relishing the wet sheen of the oysters, the translucence of the wine and the cool fall of the linen. Every texture is rendered with tactile precision, the whole composition balanced between abundance and restraint. Luxurious, atmospheric and exquisitely glazed, it captures the quiet decadence of the laid table in the finest old-master style.
An original oil painting on canvas by Cornelis Maes, painted to order — never a reproduction. Sumptuous old-master still lifes — lavish flowers, fruit and banquet pieces in dramatic chiaroscuro, hyper-detailed and richly glazed in the manner of the Dutch masters.
