Orion
Orion is among the most striking works in Octavia Sterne's Celestial Cartography. The great hunter strides across the star map as a classical figure rendered in gold line-work, the three bright stars of his belt blazing at his waist, the surrounding constellations and a crescent moon mapped in fainter gilt across the deep blue field. Sterne frames the scene with concentric degree-rings and ornate compass roses, in the manner of the grand Baroque star-atlases. The figure lends the chart a mythic, narrative quality, the gold glowing against the indigo night. Dramatic, elegant and richly decorative, it shows how Celestial Cartography turns the constellations into living stories written in gold.
