Ocean Giants
Ocean Giants closes Marisol Vey's second mosaic suite in the deep. A whale and her calf glide upward through sapphire water, their vast bodies built from tiles of cobalt, teal, slate and silver, while tessellated bubbles rise around them and shafts of golden light pierce the dark from above. Vey uses the leaded grout to model the great ribbed flanks and the gentle turn of the calf toward its mother, giving the pair real tenderness and weight. The cool mosaic of the deep, warmed by the falling light, makes the scene feel both immense and intimate. Majestic and quietly moving, it is a fitting, monumental finale to the Tessellated Luminism series.
