Night Sentinel

Night Sentinel is the most atmospheric work in Marisol Vey's Tessellated Luminism. A wide-eyed owl grips a bare branch beneath a full moon, its amber and umber plumage built from warm overlapping tesserae that catch the light like fired clay, while behind it the night sky is a deep mosaic of sapphire, indigo and silver squares. The moon itself is a disc of pale cream tiles glowing against the cold field. Vey uses the dark leaded grout to model the owl's watchful face, so the great round eyes seem lit from within. Still, vigilant and quietly mysterious, it carries all the hushed weight of the nocturne — wisdom rendered in jewelled glass.
