Night Garden

Night Garden is the richest and most mysterious work in the series. Luminous organic forms — soft glowing shapes and curved ribbons in emerald, teal, plum, amber and rose — float against a deep ink-blue, near-black ground, as if a garden were glowing in the dark. Avery reverses her usual lightness here, letting jewel tones bloom out of shadow, each form softly lit at the centre and dissolving at the edge. The depth is real and seductive; the eye wanders the dark in search of the source of the glow. Opulent, nocturnal and serene, it carries genuine atmosphere and weight — contemporary abstraction in a minor, luxurious key.
