Monarch Flight

Monarch Flight is Marisol Vey at her most delicate. A loose cluster of monarch butterflies drifts upward across the canvas, and Vey renders each wing as a brilliant little mosaic of orange, black and cream tiles set within dark leaded lines, so every insect reads like a fragment of stained glass come loose and taken to the air. The ground behind is a soft tessellated field of teal, sage and gold that lets the warm wings flicker forward. There is real impasto here — the tiles stand proud of the surface, so the swarm seems to hover above the canvas. Fragile, joyful and weightless, it proves that Vey's mosaic method can capture not just mass but the trembling lightness of flight.
