Lioness
Lioness is among the most arresting portraits Marisol Vey has made. The great cat fills the frame, gazing directly out, and Vey builds her tawny coat from glowing tesserae of gold, ochre and umber, the tiles tightening across the muzzle and broadening over the powerful shoulders. The amber eyes — each a tiny cluster of luminous glass — hold the viewer with unnerving calm. Behind her a tessellated savanna sunset burns crimson into violet, throwing the warm head forward. The dark leaded grout gives the face its structure and its gravity. Regal, watchful and utterly composed, it is a study in quiet power, queen of the Tessellated Luminism menagerie.
