Leo is one of the most regal works in Octavia Sterne's Celestial Cartography. The constellation is drawn as a golden lion mid-stride across the star map, its principal stars marked in gilded points along its body, the surrounding sky a deep indigo banded with a zodiac ring and ornate corner compass roses. Sterne works in the grand tradition of figured star-atlases, her fine gold line-work lending the lion a heraldic nobility. The luminous gold against the dark blue is richly decorative. Elegant, mythic and beautifully balanced, it captures the age-old impulse to read kingship and character into the stars — Celestial Cartography at its most majestic.
