The Great Comet
The Great Comet is among the most dramatic works in Octavia Sterne's Celestial Cartography. A brilliant comet streaks across an antique sky map, its long golden tail arcing over the mapped constellations, the whole enclosed in an ornate circular border of degrees, compass roses and engraved medallions on deep indigo. Sterne evokes the broadside charts that once recorded the passage of great comets as omens and wonders, her fine gilt line-work lending the scene both science and awe. The sweep of the gold tail against the dark sky gives the piece real movement and drama. Elegant, evocative and richly decorative, it captures the thrill of a comet crossing the old celestial maps.
