The Gilded Elephant

The Gilded Elephant is Marisol Vey at her most ceremonial. The great animal faces the viewer head-on, ears spread wide, and Vey renders its vast wrinkled hide as a patient field of grey, slate, lilac and warm-brown tesserae, each tile catching the light a little differently so the skin seems to breathe. Across the brow and ears she lays jewel-toned ceremonial patterns in gold, teal and crimson, a nod to festival caparison, all set against a radiant tessellated ground of amber. The dark leaded lines model the deep folds of the hide with real sculptural weight. Dignified, monumental and quietly tender, it turns a symbol of memory and strength into a glowing icon.
