The Dead Grove
The Dead Grove is the work that announces Silas Crowe's Visionary Macabre. A single colossal dead tree, its black branches clawing at a swirling teal sky, stands on a dune of pale earth above a vast plain of blood-red marbled liquid that flows in thick impasto ribbons threaded with bone-white and ochre. Weathered grey skulls drift half-sunk in the current, and a pale moon-like sun churns overhead in the Van-Gogh manner. Crowe paints with heavy, sinuous oil strokes that make the whole ground seem to writhe and breathe. The effect is both terrible and beautiful — a memento mori turned sublime. Haunting, hypnotic and richly textured, it sets the haunted tone for the entire collection.
An original oil painting on canvas by Silas Crowe, painted to order — never a reproduction. Turbulent visionary oil dreamscapes — blood-red marbled rivers, twisted dead trees and weathered skulls beneath swirling Van-Gogh skies; haunting, sublime and richly textured.
