Celestial Globe
Celestial Globe closes Octavia Sterne's Celestial Cartography with a flourish. An ornate globe rests on a decorative gilded stand, its deep-blue surface engraved with gold constellations and a banded zodiac, a compass rose and stars floating in the surrounding night. Sterne evokes the magnificent celestial globes of the great cartographers, objects that were as much sculpture as science. The glowing gold detail wrapped over the curved blue sphere, set against the dark field, gives the piece a sumptuous three-dimensional richness. Elegant, scholarly and beautifully crafted, it is a fitting finale to the collection — the whole heavens gathered into a single golden globe.
