Woman in Blue
Woman in Blue is Modern Portraiture at its most serene. Stefan Adler seats a young woman against a plain, warm ground and draws her in the unmistakable language Modigliani forged — the impossibly long neck, the gently tilted oval head, the almond eyes left soft and almost without pupils, as if turned inward. She wears a deep blue dress, her hands folded with quiet grace in her lap, the whole figure elongated into a single elegant, sculptural rhythm. Adler works in the School of Paris idiom, where the linear distillation of African and archaic mask-carving meets the refinement of the Italian portrait tradition; the result is a face that is at once a specific person and a timeless, mask-like ideal. The palette is muted and tender — warm ochre skin, deep blue cloth, a soft neutral surround — and the line does almost all the work, flowing and certain. There is melancholy here, and great dignity: the sitter withholds her gaze, keeping her inner life her own. Quietly beautiful and instantly recognisable, it turns portraiture into pure elegant feeling — a study in the grace of restraint.
An original oil painting on canvas by Stefan Adler, painted to order — never a reproduction. Elongated, mask-like portraits with long necks, almond eyes and warm earthen colour — School of Paris elegance in the spirit of Modigliani.
