The Reclining Woman
The Reclining Woman is the series at its most classical and assured. Stefan Adler lays an elongated draped figure along the full width of the canvas, serene against a warm, simplified ground — the great reclining motif that runs from Titian and Goya to Modigliani, here rendered in that unmistakable modern, linear language. The body is stretched into a single elegant rhythm, the oval face tilted and calm, the almond eyes soft and inward; the palette is warm and muted, ochre and rose against deep neutrals. Adler works in the School of Paris idiom, where the sensuous and the sculptural meet — the figure both a real, resting presence and a timeless ideal of repose. The simplification is the sophistication: every line is essential, every curve considered, nothing superfluous. There is calm here, and a quiet, dignified beauty, the model entirely at ease and entirely self-possessed. Elegant, harmonious and instantly recognisable, it brings the grand tradition of the reclining figure into the modern age with warmth and restraint. It is a hymn to repose, drawn in a single graceful, unbroken line.
An original oil painting on canvas by Stefan Adler, painted to order — never a reproduction. Elongated, mask-like portraits with long necks, almond eyes and warm earthen colour — School of Paris elegance in the spirit of Modigliani.
