The Young Man

The Young Man brings Modern Portraiture's elegant elongation to a male sitter. Stefan Adler paints a slender youth in a dark jacket, his head tilted a touch to one side on a long, swan-like neck, the oval face simplified almost to a mask, the eyes soft and inward-looking. The reference is unmistakably to Modigliani, who fused the linear purity of African carving and archaic sculpture with the tenderness of the Italian tradition; here the young man sits with a composed, faintly melancholic grace, neither posing nor performing.
