The Young Man
The Young Man brings Modern Portraiture's elegant elongation to a male sitter. Stefan Adler paints a slender youth in a dark jacket, his head tilted a touch to one side on a long, swan-like neck, the oval face simplified almost to a mask, the eyes soft and inward-looking. The reference is unmistakably to Modigliani, who fused the linear purity of African carving and archaic sculpture with the tenderness of the Italian tradition; here the young man sits with a composed, faintly melancholic grace, neither posing nor performing. Adler keeps the palette warm and muted — ochre and sienna skin, a charcoal jacket, a plain warm ground — and lets the flowing, certain line carry the feeling. The almond eyes are left almost blank, that famous device that turns a likeness into a meditation, withholding the sitter's inner world even as it draws us in. Refined, quiet and quietly modern, it captures a particular young dignity, the self-possession of someone still becoming who they are. It is portraiture reduced to its most elegant essentials — line, tilt, and the eloquence of a withheld gaze.
An original oil painting on canvas by Stefan Adler, painted to order — never a reproduction. Elongated, mask-like portraits with long necks, almond eyes and warm earthen colour — School of Paris elegance in the spirit of Modigliani.
