The Wedding Dream
The Wedding Dream gathers Chagall's whole vocabulary of love into one soaring image. A bride and groom rise together into the night air above their village, accompanied by the familiar cast of his world — a white goat, a red rooster, a floating candelabrum, a glowing moon — all suspended in deep blue. Mira Aronson works in the most tender and celebratory of Chagall's modes, where a wedding is not merely an event but a transfiguration, the couple lifted bodily out of the ordinary world by the force of the vow. The colour is sumptuous and emotive, the drawing flowing and dreamlike, gravity entirely forgotten. Folk memory saturates the scene — the village, the animals, the candle-light of ceremony — yet the feeling is universal: the weightlessness of a day when two lives become one. There is joy here, and the faint, sweet melancholy of passing time that runs through all of Chagall. Lyrical, romantic and quietly profound, it turns a wedding into a flight, and a flight into a blessing. It is love rendered as levitation, a vow made visible against the moon.
An original oil painting on canvas by Mira Aronson, painted to order — never a reproduction. Dreamlike folk fantasy — floating lovers, fiddlers and flying figures over moonlit villages in deep blues and reds, in the poetic spirit of Chagall.
