Lovers Over the Village
Lovers Over the Village floats free of gravity and into pure feeling. A couple drifts weightlessly above the snow-dusted rooftops of a little village at night, their bodies tilted into the deep blue air, held aloft by nothing but love itself. Mira Aronson works squarely in the poetic idiom of Chagall, where the laws of the physical world yield to the logic of the heart and memory: lovers fly, villages tilt, the moon presides over all. The palette is Chagall's own — saturated midnight blue shot through with reds and a warm window-glow below — and the dream-logic is total, the figures serene rather than startled by their flight. There is folk memory here, the remembered shtetl of childhood transfigured into reverie, and there is the universal truth that love unmoors us from the ground. Aronson paints with a tender, slightly naïve grace, the drawing flowing and lyrical rather than precise. Joyful, weightless and deeply romantic, it turns the oldest metaphor — love that makes us fly — into a literal, luminous image. It is a painting that seems to lift the whole room with it.
An original oil painting on canvas by Mira Aronson, painted to order — never a reproduction. Dreamlike folk fantasy — floating lovers, fiddlers and flying figures over moonlit villages in deep blues and reds, in the poetic spirit of Chagall.
