The Blue Circus

The Blue Circus enters Chagall's beloved arena of acrobats, animals and dream. Against a deep midnight-blue ground, an acrobat arcs through the air above a white horse while a red rooster and a crescent moon look on, the whole scene weightless, joyful and faintly melancholy. Mira Aronson draws on Chagall's lifelong fascination with the circus as a metaphor for life itself — its performers flying and falling, its colour and spectacle shadowed by transience. The palette is dominated by that signature saturated blue, pierced with reds, greens and a glowing white horse. Logic dissolves: the acrobat floats, the animals join the dance, the laws of the ring give way to the laws of dream. There is exuberance here and, beneath it, the wistful knowledge that every performance ends. Aronson's drawing is flowing and tender, naïve in the best sense, alive with feeling. Vivid, poetic and quietly bittersweet, it turns the circus into a vision of existence — fragile, marvellous and forever in mid-air. It is a celebration that knows its own impermanence, and is the more beautiful for it.

An original oil painting on canvas by Mira Aronson, painted to order — never a reproduction. Dreamlike folk fantasy — floating lovers, fiddlers and flying figures over moonlit villages in deep blues and reds, in the poetic spirit of Chagall.
