The Cathedral at Twilight

Clara Whitcombe · No. 47

The Cathedral at Twilight

A close frontal view of the façade of a Gothic limestone cathedral — three pointed-arch portals, central traceried rose window, two asymmetric side towers rising out of frame, dense Gothic ornament (pinnacles, flying buttresses, statues of saints, friezes) — at evening twilight. Sunset light strikes the façade From The Left in raking angle, transforming the stone into a cascade of shifting colour: warm salmon-pink, golden ochre, lavender violet, powdery mauve in shadowed recesses, pale peach at brightest points. Darkness encroaches from below and right in deep violet and Prussian blue. Architectural details dissolve into colour vibration, contours melt into twilight haze.

An original oil painting on canvas by Clara Whitcombe, painted to order — never a reproduction. Impressionist light on water — ponds, bridges, poppy fields and shifting weather.
