Cathedral Fracture

In this canvas the artist isolates the cathedral’s once‑sacred pane as a field of fractured geometry, each shard rendered with a gestural sweep of luminous acrylic. The violent thunderstorm that precipitated the break is suggested not by literal clouds but by diagonal strokes of cobalt and lead that pierce the composition, echoing the sudden fissure. Light, filtered through the myriad fragments, scatters into a kaleidoscope of muted reds, deep blues and amber, producing an almost musical flicker across the surface. The texture of the paint, thick in the centre where the biggest shards converge, invites the viewer to sense the tactile weight of broken glass. By abstracting the architectural context, Solstice transforms a moment of ruin into a meditation on transience; the viewer is drawn to the interplay of order – the underlying cruciform – and chaos, the jagged outlines that defy it. The work hums with the lingering echo of the storm, a reminder of nature’s capacity to both illuminate and shatter the spaces we deem permanent. The palette’s muted earth tones at the periphery suggest the cathedral’s stone walls, grounding the ethereal light in a tangible reality, and underscoring the resilience of sacred architecture.

An original oil painting on canvas by Eira Solstice, painted to order — never a reproduction. Eira Solstice expands Abstract Expressionism with a luminous, iridescent palette and a technique that blends poured acrylics with metallic leaf and fine sandpaper scraping, creating surfaces that shift between translucence and deep opacity. The work feels both celestial and tectonic, inviting viewers to experience color as matter and memory.
