Rooted Thunder
An ancient oak dominates the canvas, its gnarled trunk rendered in thick, earthy strokes of umber and deep green, while the surrounding soil is a dense, dark mass of almost black pigment. A bolt of lightning slices through the scene with a jagged, electric line of cadmium yellow, fracturing the tree’s bark and exposing a network of twisted roots that snake into the earth. The artist’s technique emphasizes texture: the bark is built up in heavy impasto, each ridge catching light, while the roots are suggested by delicate, overlapping lines that dissolve into the soil’s chiaroscuro. The lightning’s brilliance is amplified by a surrounding halo of pale white, creating an after‑image effect that conveys the sudden, fleeting nature of the strike. By abstracting the oak’s majestic form, Solstice invites contemplation of nature’s dual capacity for endurance and vulnerability. The composition balances the solidity of the ancient tree with the transient, luminous energy of the bolt, highlighting the tension between permanence and ephemerality. The work’s muted palette, punctuated only by the flash of yellow, underscores the quiet power that lies within the natural world.
An original oil painting on canvas by Eira Solstice, painted to order — never a reproduction. Eira Solstice expands Abstract Expressionism with a luminous, iridescent palette and a technique that blends poured acrylics with metallic leaf and fine sandpaper scraping, creating surfaces that shift between translucence and deep opacity. The work feels both celestial and tectonic, inviting viewers to experience color as matter and memory.
