Fallen Astronaut

Marcus Kade · No. 118

Fallen Astronaut

Fallen Astronaut is the most quietly affecting work in Kade's series. A lone spaceman sits slumped on a kerb, helmet cradled in his hands, dwarfed by a vast empty wall, a small pool of blue the only colour in the greyscale stencil. The image carries the melancholy wit that street art does so well — the explorer who reached for the stars and ended up sitting on the pavement. Kade leaves generous empty space, letting the isolation breathe. Tender, humorous and faintly heartbreaking, it tells a complete human story with almost nothing. It is a small figure in a great silence, and all the more moving for it.

An original oil painting on canvas by Marcus Kade, painted to order — never a reproduction. Urban street art — spray paint, stencil and oilstick over concrete-textured canvas, with drips, overspray and raw graphic energy.
