Aurum Field

August Vance · No. 111

Aurum Field

Aurum Field is the radiant climax of August Vance's series, the moment the restraint of the other works gives way to frank splendour. An oatmeal linen ground is flooded by a broad, luminous passage of gold leaf that pools and spreads like late afternoon sun across a wall, the metal shifting from warm to cool, from matte to brilliant, as the viewer moves before it. Where the rest of the collection rations its gold to a seam or a thread, this painting lavishes it, and the effect is unashamedly sumptuous — closer to a Byzantine ground or one of Klimt's golden fields than to anything austere. Yet the composition remains disciplined and sure: the gold is given generous room to breathe against the calm neutral, never tipping into mere glitter, always held by the painter's judgment. The interplay of humble linen and precious metal is the whole drama, base and noble material reconciled on a single plane. Grand, glowing and openly luxurious, it is the statement piece of the series — a work that quite literally turns light into wealth, and fills a room with a warm, shifting radiance that feels less hung than illuminated.

An original oil painting on canvas by August Vance, painted to order — never a reproduction. Large-scale gestural abstraction — sweeping palette-knife strokes, plaster texture and gold-leaf veins in muted, architectural palettes built for grand interiors.
