Wonder Pup
Wonder Pup brings Pop's bold graphic language to its most disarmingly affectionate subject. A bright-eyed dog faces forward in full comic-book regalia — flat colour fur, crisp halftone shadow, a confident black contour — its open, eager expression granted the same heroic frontality the genre reserves for film stars and consumer goods. Dexter Wynn knows the appeal is shameless, and he embraces it completely: this is the humble pet portrait reimagined as icon, sincerity delivered through the cool, knowing machinery of Pop. There is something faintly subversive in the move — to lavish the visual grammar of celebrity and advertising on a creature whose only currency is loyalty and joy. The flat planes keep the image punchy and legible; the halftone dots keep it honest about its printed, popular origins; the direct gaze does the rest, meeting the viewer with uncomplicated warmth. Where so much Pop trades in irony and critique, this work simply radiates good humour, a jolt of pure delight in saturated colour. It is affection turned into emblem, devotion rendered with a grin — proof that the genre's flat, witty surface can carry genuine heart, and that an icon need not be famous to be beloved.
An original oil painting on canvas by Dexter Wynn, painted to order — never a reproduction. Pop-art icons in flat primary colour, Ben-Day dots and bold black outlines — everyday objects and bright portraits with a comic-book punch.
