Time Pool
Time Pool gives surrealism's most famous obsession a fresh, liquid life. In an empty desert at dusk, a pocket watch softens, droops and dissolves into the still surface of a small pool, time itself melting into reflection, the hours running like water. Crane nods unmistakably to the soft watches of surrealism's most celebrated image while making the conceit his own: here the melting is not decay but transformation, time becoming the very element it is so often compared to. The vast, quiet landscape and the long shadows lend the scene a hushed, dreamlike gravity. There is melancholy in it — the relentless slipping-away of the hours — but also a strange peace, as if time, having pooled, might at last hold still. Crane paints sand, sky and water with crisp, luminous precision, anchoring the impossible in convincing light. Contemplative, uncanny and quietly profound, it turns the most abstract of subjects into a single unforgettable image — a meditation on time, memory and dissolution, rendered with poise and poetry.
An original oil painting on canvas by Elias Crane, painted to order — never a reproduction. Modern surrealism — dreamlike landscapes, impossible architecture and floating objects in luminous, uncanny skies, in the spirit of Dalí and Magritte.
