Iron and Iris
‘Iron and Iris’ portrays a vintage steam locomotive emerging from a tunnel whose interior walls are composed of kaleidoscopic glass panels, each fragment catching and amplifying the early morning light. Duvall’s Vitral Luminism technique renders the locomotive’s ironwork in a deep, soot‑blackened hue, contrasted sharply with the riotous colour of the glass tunnel which refracts the sunrise into a spectrum of amber, violet and jade. The locomotive’s plume of smoke is depicted not as ash but as luminous vapor, a soft, pearlescent mist that seems to rise from the glass itself, merging with the surrounding light. The composition’s perspective draws the eye forward, inviting the viewer to feel the momentum of the train as it bursts into the open, its wheels turning against a backdrop of shimmering fragments. Duvall’s restrained palette—dominant greys and metallics punctuated by the glass’s vivid hues—creates a tension between industrial might and fragile beauty. The work captures a fleeting moment of transition, where the mechanical and the ethereal intersect, suggesting a journey that is as much about visual revelation as it is about physical locomotion.
