Obsidian Bloom
Vance’s "Obsidian Bloom" juxtaposes the darkness of volcanic glass with the heat of molten gold, sculpting a phoenix that erupts from a field of obsidian roses. The phoenix, its feathers forged in delicate gilt filigree, rises in a spiralling ascent that seems to carve its own light through the surrounding black petals. Each rose, rendered in deep, glass‑like black, bears subtle veining of midnight blue, hinting at hidden veins of life within the stone. The composition unfolds in layered terraces, a signature of the Gilded Strata approach, where each tier of rose and feather is rendered with increasing translucency, creating a luminous depth that draws the eye upward. The background, a muted charcoal sky, is punctuated by faint streaks of sunrise amber, reinforcing the theme of rebirth. Vance’s precise handling of texture—contrasting the smooth, reflective surfaces of obsidian with the tactile, almost tactile gold—produces a tension that feels both ancient and contemporary, a quiet celebration of resilience expressed through opulent materiality.
