Zen of Refraction

In ‘Zen of Refraction’, Elara Duvall situates a serene Buddhist monk atop a crystal pagoda, the structure itself a monolithic prism that catches the nascent sunrise and fractures it into a spectrum of delicate beams. The Vitral Luminism approach renders the monk’s robes in muted ochre, their texture subtly softened by the ambient glow, while the surrounding prisms—sprawling, faceted stones—refract the light into a kaleidoscope of pastel hues that cascade across the surrounding mist. The composition balances stillness with dynamic illumination: the monk’s posture is impeccably composed, embodying tranquility, yet the surrounding light is in constant, gentle flux, suggesting the impermanence of all things. Duvall’s careful use of colour—soft rose, muted teal, amber—creates an atmosphere of contemplative quietude, while the crystalline surfaces lend an ethereal quality that feels both anchored and transcendent. The work invites the viewer to consider the interplay between inner peace and external brilliance, as the refracted sunrise becomes a metaphor for enlightenment, diffusing across the crystalline landscape in a quiet, luminous harmony.
