Exotic Figs and Brass Candlestick
A porcelain bowl, rendered with a subtle glaze that catches the ambient light, overflows with an opulent assortment of exotic fruit: figs heavy with a velvety skin, dates whose caramelised surfaces glisten, and pomegranates split open to reveal ruby‑red arils. Adjacent, a polished brass candlestick stands upright, its surface warm from a solitary droplet of wax that has pooled and begun to drip, forming a thin, amber‑streaked trail. The candle’s flame, though modest, throws a soft, golden radiance across the bowl, illuminating the fruit’s texture and the candlestick’s reflective sheen. The composition is anchored by a dark, understated cloth that provides contrast without detracting from the sumptuous colour palette. In true Dutch Golden Age fashion, the piece celebrates the richness of worldly abundance while subtly reminding the viewer of transience through the melting wax and the inevitable decay of the ripe produce.
An original oil painting on canvas by Elias Marrow, painted to order — never a reproduction. A contemporary twist on 17th‑century banquet tables, Marrow blends traditional chiaroscuro with a cool‑turquoise and copper palette, emphasizing reflective surfaces and delicate translucency.
